The Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Social Sciences features leading faculty from a variety of academic departments at the University of Washington. Our faculty members are experienced teachers and scholars at the forefront of their fields who are dedicated to student growth and learning.

    matthew sparke

    Matthew Sparke is a professor in the Department of Geography and the Jackson School of International Studies and the director of the online Integrated Social Sciences program at the University of Washington. He grew up in the United Kingdom, was educated at the University of Oxford and moved to North America for his graduate work. He has been teaching at the UW since 1996. Sparke's research focuses on globalization, and he is the author of the textbook Introducing Globalization (2013). He also teaches in the Department of Global Health and does research on the ties and tensions between health and globalization.

    "The ISS curriculum will provide a broad-based interdisciplinary education, designed to give students the skills and knowledge they need to survive and thrive as citizens of a complex globalized world. As program director, it's my goal to make sure that our curriculum delivers on this promise of a global education in ways that are useful for each and every student."

    Mel Wensel is the director of academic services for the online Integrated Social Sciences program. She has worked in academic advising at the UW for more than 25 years, serving the majority of that time as director of academic services for the Department of English. A former Fulbright fellow, Wensel came to the UW in 1985 as a PhD student in English before transitioning to a career as an adviser a few years later. She joined the ISS program in 2013. Wensel has received a number of awards for her advising work, including UW Adviser of the Year.

    "I believe that an adviser's role is to help students develop strong intellectual identities, take ownership of their educations and lay the foundation for satisfying professional lives and engaged citizenship. I'm excited to be leading the advising efforts for this innovative new online major."
